Hey! My name is Mary Mahoney and I am a freshman at Penn State. I am from a suburb about 20 minutes outside of Philadelphia, called Drexel Hill, in Delaware County. It has always been my dream to go to Penn State, because it is all i have ever known. My cousin, Steve, now 33, went here, so from a very young age, I was inundated with Penn State pride and spirit. One could call this subliminal messaging, I assume. As soon I recieved the acceptance letter, I was sold and I could not be happier. Unfortunately, I was only accpeted to come if I attended the summer session here on campus. I was dreading it because I did not want ot miss my senior summer with my friends, however, I was pleasantly surprised. I had an absolutely amazing time here. I met tons of people, got very acquainted with campus and college life, as well as created countless, unforgettable memories. Coming here this summer was the one of the best decisions I have made to date.
I went to Merion Mercy Academy, an all-girls private catholic high school in Merion Station, PA, about 10 minutes outside of Philly. People are absolutely shocked when they here this and just don't understand how we survived. But really, it was such a great experience. We were able to grow and learn in a stress-free environment around people we were comfortable with and trusted. And yes. we knew PLENTY of boys and had our fair share of boy drama, as well. While at Merion, I was on the crew team and a part of the musical theatre program, for all 4 years. Through these activites, I have made some of my closest and most treasured friends. For those who don't know what crew is, it is another term for the sport of rowing. I was immediately hooked after my sister joined the team a few years before me. My position on the team is the coxswain (the little short person who sits in the front of the boat, steers, and yells a lot!) This is a very well-respected position, as well as highly desirable. This has taught me quite a lot about teamwork, responsibilty, and respect.
Aside from racing, I very much enjoy performing. In the program MMMT (Merion Mercy Music Theatre), I have performed in Into the Woods, Crazy For You, Les Miserables, and Phantom of the Opera. These shows have won countless awards for set design, dance, acting, costumes, and many more. Also, some of my most priceless memories were made behind the scenes with my fellow actors and friends. Through the months of production, I have probably never laughed so hard in my life.
Phantom of the Opera
Waiting for me at home is my mother, Liz, my father, Jim, and my older sister, Karen, who is 23. She attended LaSalle University in Philadelphia. I consider Karen one of my best friends. I can tell her anything and she usually gives me some of the best advice in return. However, my mother and I are definitely closer. We share clothes, shoes, and secrets. I don't know how much closer one could get. Also, all of us cousins on my mom's side have very close bonds with each other and even consider each other brothers and sisters. I miss my close-knit family a lot being here at state but secretly, I know they're jealous. :]
